The choral music of “The Mighty Handful”, the five self-taught composers who worked together in the 19th century to create a distinct school of Russian classical music; including professional chemist Alexander Borodin’s grand “Requiem” based on the children’s piano piece “Chopsticks”, Modest Mussorgsky’s last operatic chorus, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s ethereal Orthodox music, beautiful part-songs composed by military fortifications expert César Cui, and the choral compositions of virtuoso pianist Mily Balakirev.
